Starodruk. BUFFON Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux (1799) (ptaki) 9 tomów w unikalnym stanie wewnętrznym (Komplet rycin!)
Opis przedmiotu:
Przedmiotem aukcji jest urokliwy, spójny i bogato ilustrowany dziewięciotomowy zestaw (tomy I–IX) poświęcony ornitologii: „Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux” (Historia naturalna ptaków). Autorem dzieła jest jeden z najwybitniejszych przyrodników oświecenia – Georges-Louis Leclerc, hrabia de Buffon.
Prezentowany komplet to poszukiwane przez zbieraczy, kieszonkowe wydanie stereotypowe (format 12°) z przełomu wieków, wydrukowane w Paryżu przez legendarną oficynę P. Didot l'Aîné & Firmin Didot. Wszystkie woluminy noszą jednolitą datę wydania: AN VII — 1799 rok (rok siódmy według francuskiego kalendarza rewolucyjnego).
Stan zachowania i cechy egzemplarza:
Uwagi bibliograficzne i drobne braki strukturalne:
BUFFON – Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux (1799) – 9 Volumes in Pristine Internal Condition (Complete Plates!)
Item Description:
Up for auction is a charming, uniform, and richly illustrated nine-volume set (Volumes I–IX) dedicated to ornithology: "Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux" (The Natural History of Birds). This monumental work was authored by one of the most prominent naturalists of the Enlightenment – Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon.
This particular set is a highly collectible, pocket-sized stereotype edition (12mo format) from the turn of the century, printed in Paris by the legendary press of P. Didot l'Aîné & Firmin Didot. All volumes bear a uniform publication date: AN VII — 1799 (Year Seven according to the French Revolutionary Calendar).
Condition Report & Features:
INTERIOR (Museum / Cabinet Quality): The paper, text print, and all illustrated plates are in pristine (ideal) condition. The text block is exceptionally clean, tight, and completely free from foxing (moisture spotting), tears, or creases, which is incredibly rare for 18th-century paper.
ILLUSTRATIONS (100% Complete): All original copperplate engravings by the renowned artist Jacques de Sève are fully present. No plates have been excised or removed, making this set an exceptional rarity on the secondary market.
BINDING: Original period full calf leather (brown, mottled/speckled) with gilt-decorated spines, red morocco title labels, and floral motifs. The spines of Volumes 5 through 9 are preserved in near-mint condition (virtually no rubbing). Volumes 1–3 show minor, natural shelf wear that does not affect the legibility of the gilt titles and ornaments. Volume 4 shows the most prominent signs of age and wear (heavy rubbing to the spine leather), providing an authentic, historic character.
PROVENANCE (Ownership History): The books boast a fascinating library pedigree, confirmed by two historical bookplates. Volumes (with the exception of Vol. 5) feature a simplified, elegant calligraphic bookplate of the French aristocratic family "L. de Laas". Volume 1, serving as the flagship for the entire series, is additionally adorned with a large, grand heraldic copperplate ex-libris of the British collector Robert Cole
(featuring a lion motif).
Bibliographical Notes & Minor Structural Flaws:
As a reputable seller, I would like to note minor, natural technical flaws to the bindings, typical for books over 220 years old: Volume 5 is the only one lacking the first decorative marbled endpaper (and consequently, the simplified bookplate). In Volume 1, the large lion bookplate was pasted directly onto the second flyleaf/pastedown due to the absence of the very first protective blank leaf. These minor flaws do not affect the text or the condition of the plates themselves.
Why Invest?
Works by Buffon with a complete set of untouched copperplate engravings and in such pristine internal condition are a rare find on the market today. This set represents an excellent capital investment for a bibliophile, a stunning centerpiece for a study library, or a unique, luxurious gift with a rich history.
